"Tuning With" - a voice journey
/This practice is rooted in principles that encourage deep connection and creative freedom. By engaging with this exploration, we allow ourselves to become the other, or an aspect of the other, stepping into full embodiment of its essence. Our voices become vessels, channeling energies, impulses, and musical visions beyond our own.
Rather than feeling the pressure to create from scratch, we are reminded that we are always in dialogue—with someone, something, or the world itself. By focusing our intention outward, we engage in a musical conversation that is both powerful and life-giving. Through this, we practice translating qualities—visual, perceptual, emotional—into musical flow, nurturing a synesthetic perception of the world that opens creative possibilities instead of narrowing them.
Ultimately, this practice invites us to observe and sense the world with fresh eyes, a humble attitude, and a heightened awareness of hidden details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Connect and Observe
Find a specific object, organic element, or ‘being’ around you — whether it’s in your room, a forest, or another environment you are in at this moment. Take a moment to observe it closely, sensing its essence. Then identify and name three qualities about it that inspire or touch you. These qualities could be visual, physical, textural, kinaesthetic, emotional, poetic, or even a memory it evokes in you.
Tune with
Choose the one quality that resonates most deeply with you. Let this quality guide and inform your voice, allow it to take you for a little ride. Begin to voice, hum, sing with it, from it, to it, and for it. The singing doesn’t have to be musical or at all composed; it can consist of primal sounds, vocal sighing, humming or spontaneous melodies without a specific musical intention—other than deeply connecting with the chosen quality. Let your voice explore this quality freely and intuitively, invite yourself to become this quality.
You can continue voicing or singing for as long as you feel drawn to, allowing yourself to express all the colours and aspects of that quality. And when you arrive to a sense of completion of this connection, let the voice rest and come back to contemplative listening.
Rest and Receive
Pause and rest in silence. Feel the resonance of the song or humming you channeled. Imagine that the object or being is singing back to you. Open yourself to receive its response.
Set an Intention
Write down the quality you sang with. Let this quality serve as an intention to carry with you through your day.
